We, the teachers, recognize that it is difficult to help your child with their school work, especially when they don’t bring home the stories, textbooks, and notes. It’s also a difficult struggle to get teenagers to talk to us. That being said, we need to look for ways to make sure they are learning the material. Below are a few questions that are not too invasive and can be asked at any time (dinner, getting ready for school, as they walk in the door). These questions will also give you an indication if they know what is going on with their education.
What did you read in Language Arts today?
Tell me something about the main character?
What do you like about that character?
Who is the bad guy in the story?
What did they do to make them bad?
What character do you relate to the most?
The best part about these questions is you don’t need to know the answer to tell if they know what they are talking about. If it’s possible, try reading the same book as your child. Even if you have different view points, it’s a way to communicate. Please let us know if we can do anything to help.
